A New Year has begun reminding us to leave our woes behind and to tread new paths. It's a time to wave good bye to all those sad incidents and to those happy moments which kept us adrift in times of turmoil. Unburdening ourselves of old baggage we need to search for ways to lighten our emotional and physical load.
I began this New Year by watching fireworks at the Esplanade with my family. But what was more important to me this year was to spend every moment with ones I value a lot.
The roads were packed, the trains were full and people were just falling over each other like packs of cards. Whenever the train approached a station there would be a mini rat race where people would compete to out do the other and build up speed. Where they were heading in such a hurry no one knows but New Year meant just one thing then- utter chaos.
A lesson we learnt when we went for New Year this year is to get back home early. It took a lot of effort to find a city cab as everybody was trying to catch one. From one to three 0'clock we were stranded on the streets wondering whether to catch the night rider or walk our way home. I know the second idea might seem insane but by the way things looked, I would not be surprised if we did.
The next day we went to the temple and even that place was no less crowded. The gods were decorated with flowers and special prasadam was handed out to all. I hope you guys know what prasadam is. It is actually like the offerings to god which is blessed and given to people who visit the temple. So New Year day at the temple not only gave us calm minds but also sweet treats to look forward to.
When we came out of the temple there was a man who came to us in rags. As we sympathized with him we offered him the prasadam we had. But he rejected it outright and asked us for money. This is the problem with people. When you give them food they do not even take it as their minds desire only higher material things.
Ok am not philosophizing...am just trying to document my New Year weekend. When things happen we think a lot has happened. Only when we put it down do we realize it's not as big as we thought it was. I guess everything lies in how we perceive and feel.
Every year people make resolutions and promise to keep them. I personally feel there's no point making a promise and forgetting about it once New Year finishes. A resolution can be made anytime but the strength lies in keeping your word. I have not thought about a resolution yet, have you?
